The one-level-per-year structure
The format that lands hardest: a short level for every year (or every chapter, if you'd rather group eras). Each level is one real memory turned into thirty seconds of play:
- Year 1: the meet-cute as a mini-game — navigate the party, survive the first date's disastrous restaurant.
- Year 3: the IKEA boss fight. Two players, one Allen key, a FJÄLLBO with missing screws. (One-keyboard co-op is a great ask.)
- Year 5: the road trip where the GPS betrayed you — a driving level where every "shortcut" is a trap.
- Final level: tonight. The two of you on the couch, and a caption that says what you actually feel. End screens are where you're allowed to be sincere; use it.
Specificity is the whole gift. "A restaurant" is a game; "Luigi's, where the waiter sang" is a memory. Feed the AI real details and it builds them in.

Details that separate "cute" from "they cried"
- Their name in the title screen. The unwrapping moment is the title card.
- One memory they think you forgot. Deep-cut specificity is the emotional payload — the song from the third date, the nickname from the first month.
- The pet as an NPC. If you have an animal, it appears in every level. Non-negotiable. (Pet games are their own art form.)
- A new level every year. Here's the long game: revise the game each anniversary (3 tokens) to add the year's level. Ten years in, you have an heirloom.

Low-key beats grand here — this gift IS the grand gesture. A QR code in the anniversary card. The link texted from across the restaurant table with "one more present." I'm not creative — will this still work?
You're not writing the game, just listing true things: where you met, what you laughed at, what you survived. The AI handles the game design; the memories do the emotional work.
Him, her, them — does the format change?
Only the details do. The one-level-per-year structure is universal; their taste sets the tone ("make it a retro pixel RPG" vs "cozy watercolor puzzle").
What if our anniversary is tomorrow?
You're fine — a build is ~2 minutes and a focused hour of memory-listing plus one revision pass gets a genuinely good result. Panic is optional.
